ABSTRACT

The complete genome of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV)strain GXLC isolated from swine was sequenced and analyzed. Five overlapped gene fragments covering the entire open reading frame (ORF) were amplified by RT-PCR, and the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) and 5'-UTR were amplified by the 3'-rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) and 5'-RACE method, respectively. The genome sequences of strain GXLC were obtained by assembling the sequences of RT-PCR-generated cDNA fragments. The length of the complete genome was 7 725 nucleotides (nt). The homology comparison and phylogenetic analysis of the nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences between strain GXLC and other EMCV strains available in GenBank were performed. The results showed that the complete genome identity between GXLC strain and the strains from China, i.e. GX0601, GX0602, BJC3 and HB1 and the strains from other countries, i.e. CBNU, K3, K11, TEL-2887A, EMCV-R and PV21 was over 99%. The phylogenetic trees based on the complete genome, the structural protein or the non-structural protein gene sequences revealed that the tree topology was similar. All the EMCV strains could be divided into two groups: group I and group II, and group I could be subdivided into subgroup Ia and subgroup Ib. The strains from swine belonged to subgroup Ia or Ib, and the strains from mice belonged to subgroup Ia, while the strains from Sus scro fa belonged to group II. Strain GXLC, together with other EMCV isolates from China, belonged to subgroup Ia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe clinical results of Chinese herbs promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis on the treatment of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) with type of stagnation of vital energy and blood stasis.

METHODSRSD with type of stagnation of vital energy and blood stasis was distinguished as erubescence, high temperature, perspiration, damp and acro-edema, with middle level pain. From 2006 to 2008, 58 patients with RSD of stagnation of vital energy and blood stasis were randomly divided into the treatment group (30 cases) and the control group (28 cases). The former were treated with Chinese medicine to activate blood circulation and improve bone and muscle nourishment. Chinese medicine includes: Caesalpinia Sappan 10 g, Ligusticum Chuanxiong 6 g, Frankincense 6 g, Angelica 10 g, Safflower 6 g, Myrrh 6 g, Ground Beetle 10 g, Araliaceae 3 g, Radix Paeoniae Rubra 10 g, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae 5 g, Lawn Pennywort Herb 15 g, Manis Pentadactyla 10 g, Corydalis Yanhusuo 10 g, Rhizoma Drynariae 15 g, which were boiled into decoction and the patients were take orally everyday with a course of treatment for 10 days, together with the boiled Chinese traditional medicine of stretching muscle and activating blood circulation to fume and wash the limbs twice everyday. The compatibility of medicines in prescription includes: Lycopodium Japanicum Grass 10 g, Gentiana Macrophylla Pall 10 g, Radix Angelicae Pubescentis 10 g, Angelica 10 g, Uncaria 10 g, Frankincense 6 g, Myrrh 6 g, Safflower 6 g. Control group were treated with a placebo of the same color for oral use and external application. The delivery times, method and the time of therapy were all the same as the treatment group. After 30 days' treatment, the effective indexes of VAS pain score and swelling condition were observed in both groups.

RESULTSVAS pain score: the treatment group decreased (3.8 +/- 0.8) points and the control group decreased (1.0 +/- 0.3) points, the difference between the two groups was significantly (P < 0.01). There was significantly difference in volume decrease of the swelling limb between treatment group (21.8 +/- 2.5) ml and the control group (10.3 +/- 2.1) ml (P < 0.01). The efficiency difference between treatment group and control group was significantly(P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONWith the different treatment based on different syndrome and emphasis on the nourishment of bone and soft tissue, treated by Chinese medicine to promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis in stagnation of vital energy and blood stasis, RSD get a favorable result.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the expression of inhibitor-1 of DNA binding/differentiation-1 (Id-1) and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) genes in mucoepidermoid carcinoma of different malignant degree and analyze the relationship between them.

METHODSUsing immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining technique, TSP-1 and Id-1 proteins in the mucoepidermoid carcinoma of different malignant degree, including well-differentiated, moderately differentiated and poorly differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma, and normal salivary gland tissues were detected.

RESULTSThe positive rate of Id-1 and TSP-1 in normal salivary glands were apparently lower than that in malignant mucoepidermoid carcinoma(P = 0.000, P = 0.013). The positive rate of Id-1 in moderately and poorly differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma was higher than that of the well-differentiated (P = 0.001, P = 0.002). However, the positive expression of Id-1 showed no relationship between the moderately and poorly differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma(P > 0.05). The positive rate of TSP-1 in poorly differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma was less than that of the well-differentiated(P = 0.014). The positive expression of TSP-1 showed no relationship between the moderately and poorly differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma(P > 0.05), and the positive expression of it also showed no relationship between the moderately and well differentiated mucoepidermoid carcinoma (P > 0.05). The expression of Id-1 and TSP-1 showed negative correlation(r = -0.394, P = 0.002).

CONCLUSIONThe expression of TSP-1 may inhibit the development of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma, contrarily, the expression of Id-1 may prompt the development of the mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The expression of Id-1 and TSP-1 has negative correlation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical results of surgery for rotationally and vertically unstable pelvis fracture.

METHODSThirty-four patients with rotationally and vertically unstable pelvis fractures were treated. There were 23 male and 11 female, with the average age of 36 years ranging from 13 to 56 years. There were 9 cases of type APC III, 14 cases of type LC III, and 11 cases of type VS according to Young-Burgess Classifiction. All patients' pelvis were treated with temporary external fixation after hospitalization, and were treated with open reduction and internal fixation through anterior approach after stabilization of body condition.

RESULTSAll patients were followed up for 12 to 48 months (average 21 months). All the incisions healed well, and the fractures got union for 3 to 6 months. According to the Majeed evaluation, the results were excellent in 21 cases, good in 10, fair in 3. All patients were not remained deformity of rotation and dislocation. But 3 patients remained lameness, 4 remained low back pain, 3 remained both leg and feet numbness.

CONCLUSIONIn the management of the rotationally and vertically unstable pelvis fractures, a stable pelvis can be reconstructed by effective open reduction and internal fixation through the anterior approaches, so that further sequelae can be reduced.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe morphological character of posterior arch of Atlas and lamina of axis,as well as provide anatomical basis to design special guiding device for the operation of upper cervical posterior fixation with Atlas titanium cable so as to make the operation safe and easy. Methods The posterior arch of Atlas and lami- na of axis were observed and measured in 100 adult dry Atlas and axis specimens, then special guiding devices were designed based on the anatomical data. Results (1)The posterior arch of Atlas was thin with a fan-shape section, whose inner plane descended from back to inside and the lamina of axis was stronger and thicker than posterior arch of Atlas, with a vertical inner plane and a ridge near the lower edge.(2)The special guiding device for posterior arch of Atlas should be designed with a bend head as well that for lamina of axis should be designed with a round head. They were used in 61 operations which became safer and easier. Conclusion The operation of upper cervical posteri- or fixation with Atlas titanium cable would be safer with the help of special guiding devices which were designed based on the anatomical character.
